About This Examination

NT / First-Trimester Scan

What the examination is

The nuchal translucency (NT) scan measures the fluid layer at the back of the baby's neck, together with a crown–rump length measurement. The measurement is only valid within a defined window of pregnancy, which is why the timing of this appointment matters more than for most scans.

It is frequently combined with a blood test to give a combined first-trimester screening result. Your treating doctor will advise whether that combination is appropriate for you.

What the doctor assesses

The nuchal translucency measurement, dating by crown–rump length, the number of pregnancies and — in a multiple pregnancy — the chorionicity, together with an early review of what can be seen of the baby's development at this stage.

Screening, not diagnosis

This is a screening assessment. A screening result is expressed as a chance, not as a yes or no, and it does not by itself confirm or exclude a condition.

Where a screening result indicates an increased chance, the next step is a discussion — often genetic counselling — about what further testing can and cannot tell you.

What to expect

Because the window is fixed, book early so the appointment falls within it. Our team will confirm the timing and any preparation required.
