What Is It?
A first-trimester ultrasound assessment.
The NT scan is an ultrasound examination performed in the first trimester, within a defined window of pregnancy. Nuchal translucency refers to a fluid space at the back of the baby's neck that can be measured on ultrasound at this stage.
The measurement is considered together with other information as part of a screening assessment. Your treating doctor will advise whether it is appropriate for you and when it should be performed.
Screening Is Not Diagnosis
The NT measurement is one component of a screening assessment that may help estimate the chance of certain chromosomal or structural conditions. Screening estimates a chance — it does not, on its own, diagnose or exclude a condition.

What to Expect

The examination is carried out by our doctor at the centre. Because the assessment is performed within a defined window, our team will confirm the timing of your appointment and any preparation required.
Sometimes the baby's position makes a particular view difficult to obtain, and the doctor may need extra time or ask you to change position.
Good to Know
How clearly structures can be seen varies between examinations. Gestational age, the baby's position, and individual imaging conditions all affect what can be visualised on a given day.
