Information You Can Trust. Care You Can Understand.

Medical examinations can come with many questions. What is the scan for? When is it performed? What does the doctor look for? How should you prepare? What can the examination tell you — and what can it not tell you?

Our Patient Information Centre brings these questions together in one place, with simple explanations designed to help patients feel more informed and prepared.

Educational information is here to support your conversation with your doctor — not replace individual medical advice.

What Does the Doctor Look For?

A scan is more than a picture. The doctor assesses specific anatomical structures and clinical findings according to the type and purpose of the examination.

What Happens Next

When Further Assessment May Be Needed

Sometimes an examination may lead to a recommendation for additional assessment. Further evaluation does not by itself mean that something is wrong — your doctor can explain why it has been advised in your case.

Every Scan Has a Purpose — and Limitations

Ultrasound and other diagnostic examinations provide important clinical information, but no examination can answer every question.

What a Scan Can Show

  • Information relevant to the examination being performed
  • Anatomical structures appropriate to the scan
  • Measurements and observations used by the doctor
  • Findings that may require further assessment

What a Scan Cannot Tell You

  • Every possible health condition
  • Everything about future development
  • Information outside the purpose or limitations of the examination
  • A substitute for individual medical assessment

Your doctor can explain what your particular examination means in the context of your individual care.
