Pregnancy scans are performed at different stages, and each has a different purpose. Understanding what each examination is designed to look at makes the journey easier to follow.

Different examinations, different questions.
An ultrasound examination is not one single test. The scan performed early in pregnancy is looking at different things from the scan performed in the middle or later stages.
Knowing roughly what each examination is for can make appointments feel less uncertain, and can help you ask more useful questions when you see your doctor.
The Journey
Stages you may hear about.
Not every pregnancy involves every examination. Which scans are appropriate, and when, is decided by your treating doctor according to your individual circumstances.
Viability & Dating
An early examination that may be used to look at the location of the pregnancy and early development.
First-Trimester / NT
A first-trimester assessment carried out within a defined window, which may include measurement of the nuchal translucency.
Detailed Anatomy / Anomaly
A detailed mid-pregnancy examination of the baby's structural development and the structures around the baby.
Fetal Cardiac
A focused look at the fetal heart, when a more detailed cardiac assessment has been advised.
Wellbeing & Growth
A later-pregnancy examination that commonly looks at growth and related measurements.
Important
If your doctor suggests a repeat or additional examination, it usually means more information would be helpful. It does not by itself mean that something is wrong.
Who Decides
Your doctor guides the schedule.
There is no single timetable that applies to everyone. Your treating doctor advises which examinations are appropriate for your pregnancy and when they should be performed.
