Screening & Testing
Understanding Aneuploidy Screening
Screening brings several pieces of information together to estimate the chance of certain chromosomal conditions. It is not the same thing as a diagnosis.

What Screening Means
An estimate of chance, not an answer.
A screening assessment looks at several pieces of information together and produces an estimate of the chance that a particular condition is present. It applies to a population as much as to an individual.
That is the essential difference from a diagnostic test, which is performed to answer a question about an individual pregnancy more directly.
Screening Is Not Diagnosis
Screening estimates a chance. It does not diagnose or exclude a condition. A diagnostic test is a different kind of test, and your doctor can explain when one may be discussed.
How an Estimate Is Formed
Information considered together.
- 01
Ultrasound examination
- 02
Other screening information
- 03
Factors your doctor considers
- 04
An estimate of chance, discussed with you
Two Different Questions
Screening and diagnosis compared.
A screening assessment
- Estimates a chance
- Combines several pieces of information
- May lead to a discussion about further testing
- Does not confirm or exclude a condition
A diagnostic test
- Seeks a more direct answer
- Is a separate decision, discussed individually
- May involve a procedure
- Has its own considerations to discuss with your doctor
What Happens Next
Whatever a screening assessment suggests, the next step is a conversation with your treating doctor about what it means for you and what options are available.
This page is general education. Your treating doctor can explain what your own examination and report mean for you.
Appointment Notes
Questions you may want to ask
- What exactly is this screening assessment estimating?
- What would a higher or lower estimate mean in practice?
- What are my options if I would like more information?
- Is any of this screening optional?
