What Is It?
A detailed structural examination.
The anomaly scan, sometimes called a Level II or detailed anatomy scan, is a mid-pregnancy ultrasound examination. It reviews the baby's structural development, growth and the structures around the baby.
It is usually performed at a stage of pregnancy when anatomy can be examined in reasonable detail.
What the Doctor Assesses

Which areas can be examined, and how clearly, depends on the stage of pregnancy and the baby's position on the day.
Brain & spine
Central nervous system structures.
Face
Facial structures and profile views.
Heart & chest
Cardiac structures and connections.
Abdomen & abdominal wall
Abdominal organs and the abdominal wall.
Limbs
Arms, legs and skeletal structures.
Placenta, cord & amniotic fluid
The structures supporting the pregnancy.
Growth
Measurements used to follow growth.
Honest Limits
As with all ultrasound examinations, findings depend on factors such as position, gestational age and imaging conditions. A detailed scan reviews many structures carefully, but no ultrasound examination can identify every possible condition.
After the Examination
How findings are discussed.
Your report is discussed with reference to your treating doctor's advice. If a particular view could not be obtained, the doctor may suggest repeating part of the examination at a later appointment.
If your doctor suggests a repeat or additional examination, it usually means more information would be helpful. It does not by itself mean that something is wrong.
