Understanding Your Scan
What a Scan Cannot Tell You
Every examination has limits. Understanding them is part of understanding what your scan actually means.

Every Examination Has Limits
Honest Limits
What an examination cannot do.
It cannot detect everything
No ultrasound examination can identify every possible condition.
Visibility varies
Gestational age, position and imaging conditions all affect what can be seen.
Timing matters
Some things are not visible at a particular stage of pregnancy.
Some findings develop later
A structure that appears as expected today may change as pregnancy progresses.
It is not individual medical advice
An examination is one input into your care, not a substitute for assessment by your doctor.
Said Plainly
A scan that shows nothing unexpected is reassuring, but it cannot guarantee that every possible problem is absent. This is true of ultrasound everywhere, not of any one centre or machine.
Why This Matters
Knowing the limits of an examination helps you read your report sensibly and ask better questions. It also explains why a doctor may sometimes suggest looking again.
This page is general education. Your treating doctor can explain what your own examination and report mean for you.
Appointment Notes
Questions you may want to ask
- What could this examination not assess today?
- Is there anything better assessed at a different stage?
- Would another examination add useful information?
