What Does the Doctor Assess?
Brain & Spine
During a detailed examination the doctor reviews structures of the developing brain and spine, using the views that are appropriate to the stage of pregnancy.

What Is Assessed
Central nervous system structures.
Brain and spine assessment forms part of a detailed anatomy examination. The doctor obtains specific views to review structures of the developing brain and the line of the spine.
Which views are obtained depends on the examination being performed and on the stage of pregnancy.
During Your Examination
Your doctor can show you the relevant views of the brain and spine on the screen during the examination and explain what is being measured.
Why Visibility Varies
Some views are easier than others.
How clearly structures can be seen varies between examinations. Gestational age, the baby's position, and individual imaging conditions all affect what can be visualised on a given day.
If your doctor suggests a repeat or additional examination, it usually means more information would be helpful. It does not by itself mean that something is wrong.
