What Does the Doctor Assess?

Face

Facial structures may be reviewed during a detailed examination, using profile and other views where the baby's position allows.

Profile Views

What Is Assessed

Facial structures and profile.

During a detailed anatomy examination the doctor may review facial structures, including profile views, where these can be obtained.

Three-dimensional imaging is used where it is clinically appropriate and adds to the examination.

What the doctor assesses
Profile and facial views are among those a doctor may obtain during a detailed examination.
Context
How clearly structures can be seen varies between examinations. Gestational age, the baby's position, and individual imaging conditions all affect what can be visualised on a given day.

Why Position Matters

The baby decides the view.

Facial views depend a great deal on how the baby is lying. If the face is turned away or covered by a hand or the cord, a particular view may not be obtainable during that appointment.

If your doctor suggests a repeat or additional examination, it usually means more information would be helpful. It does not by itself mean that something is wrong.

Appointment Notes

Questions you may want to ask

  1. Were the facial views you needed possible today?
  2. Is 3D imaging being used for a clinical reason?
  3. Would another appointment give a better view?
