What Happens
A doctor-led examination.
Your examination is carried out at the centre by our doctor. Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation, and is widely used in pregnancy care when performed for a medical indication by trained professionals.
The doctor moves the probe to obtain particular views, and pauses to take measurements that are recorded for your report.

Taking measurements
Measurements are made carefully because they are interpreted together.
Waiting for position
If the baby is lying awkwardly, the doctor may wait, or ask you to change position, before a view can be obtained.
Reviewing quietly
Periods of quiet concentration are a normal part of a careful examination.
Visual Teaching
- What you are seeing
- An examination room at the centre, with the ultrasound system beside the couch.
- What the doctor assesses
- The screen is used by the doctor during the examination; your doctor can explain what is being shown.
- Context
- How clearly structures can be seen varies between examinations. Gestational age, the baby's position, and individual imaging conditions all affect what can be visualised on a given day.
