Screening & Testing
Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is a diagnostic procedure in which a sample of amniotic fluid is obtained for laboratory testing. It is considered individually with your doctor.

Understanding the Procedure
What Is It?
A sample of amniotic fluid.
Amniocentesis is a diagnostic procedure in which a small sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is obtained, using ultrasound to guide the procedure.
The sample is sent for laboratory testing. Which tests are performed on it depends on the question your doctor is trying to answer.
Why It May Be Advised
It may be discussed when a screening assessment or another finding raises a question that a diagnostic test could help answer, or when your individual circumstances make more information useful.
It is always an individual decision, made with your treating doctor.
What to Discuss With Your Doctor
Amniocentesis is a procedure, and it carries considerations and possible risks that need to be explained in the context of your own pregnancy. Ask your doctor to talk you through them, and take the time you need before deciding.
Where This Page Stops
This page deliberately keeps to a general explanation. Timing, technique, aftercare and risk are matters for the doctor performing or advising the procedure.
This page is general education. Your treating doctor can explain what your own examination and report mean for you.
