What Does the Doctor Assess?
Placenta, Cord & Amniotic Fluid
The structures around the baby — the placenta, the umbilical cord and the amniotic fluid — are assessed alongside the baby itself.

The Environment Around the Baby
What Is Assessed
The environment around the baby.
A pregnancy ultrasound examination reviews more than the baby. The placenta, the umbilical cord and the amniotic fluid around the baby are all part of the assessment.
Doppler evaluation of blood flow may be added where it is clinically indicated.
The Three Structures
Placenta
Its appearance and position are noted during the examination.
Umbilical cord
The cord is reviewed as part of the examination.
Amniotic fluid
The fluid around the baby is assessed.
During Your Examination
Your doctor can identify the placenta, cord and amniotic fluid on the screen during your appointment.
Good to Know
How clearly structures can be seen varies between examinations. Gestational age, the baby's position, and individual imaging conditions all affect what can be visualised on a given day.
Appointment Notes
Questions you may want to ask
- Where is the placenta lying at this examination?
- Was the amniotic fluid assessed?
- Would a repeat examination be useful later in the pregnancy?
