Following Growth Over Time

What Is It?

Looking at growth later in pregnancy.

A wellbeing or growth scan is an ultrasound examination performed in later pregnancy. It commonly looks at growth and related measurements.

Doppler evaluation of blood flow may be added where it is clinically indicated. Your referring doctor will advise whether and when this assessment is appropriate.

What May Be Assessed

Common elements of the examination.

  • Measurements

Measurements used to follow growth over time.

  • Amniotic fluid

    The fluid around the baby.

  • Position

How the baby is lying, where this is relevant.

  • Blood flow

Doppler assessment, where it is clinically indicated.

Why It May Be Repeated

Growth is followed over time.

Growth is often more informative when it is followed across more than one examination, so your doctor may advise a repeat scan after an interval.

If your doctor suggests a repeat or additional examination, it usually means more information would be helpful. It does not by itself mean that something is wrong.

Appointment Notes

Questions you may want to ask

  1. What measurements will be taken at this examination?
  2. Will Doppler assessment be included?
  3. Is a repeat scan likely to be advised?
  4. How will the findings be discussed with me?
