What Does the Doctor Assess?

Growth & Wellbeing

Measurements taken during an ultrasound examination are used to follow growth, and are most informative when considered over time.

What Is Assessed

Measurements, followed over time.

Growth assessment uses measurements taken during the ultrasound examination. A single set of measurements gives a picture of one moment; following them across examinations gives your doctor more information.

Amniotic fluid and, where clinically indicated, Doppler assessment of blood flow may also form part of a wellbeing assessment.

Measurements are made by the doctor during the examination and included in your report.
Context
Measurements are interpreted together, and in the context of your pregnancy, rather than individually.

Good to Know

If your doctor suggests a repeat or additional examination, it usually means more information would be helpful. It does not by itself mean that something is wrong.

Appointment Notes

Questions you may want to ask

  1. What measurements were taken today?
  2. How do these compare with my previous examination?
  3. Would a follow-up scan be helpful?
